O Haupt

Musica Gloria

German chamber music with traverso, recorder, oboe, strings, and harpsichord.

This programme is an ode to German instrumental chamber music from the first half of the 18th century. The ensemble Musica Gloria presents it in all its facets, from solo pieces to quartets in various combinations with winds, strings and harpsichord. The two composers who cannot be left out of such an anthology are, of course, Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. And their environment is also featured.

The centrepiece of the programme is the quartet for oboe, violin, viola & b.c. by Johann Gottlieb Janitsch, with the subtitle ‘O Haupt’. In the third movement, the oboe plays the chorale melody ‘O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden’, which Johann Sebastian Bach also used in his St. Matthew Passion. Janitsch’s piece of the same name is introduced with the latter version. Janitsch was praised in his time for his outstanding ability to let the different instruments in his quartets enter into dialogue with each other on an equal footing – a complex compositional artifice.

This fascinating aspect of his compositional talent is clearly expressed in the two quartets in this programme, while Telemann’s Fantasias for a flute instrument parries so intimately, busily and humorously with itself that the musical communication of the flute instrument with the audience is shared in a variety of ways.
