The Queen’s Masque
Ensemble Feuervogel
In the new program The Queens Masque – Metamorphoses of Power, the young ensemble Feuervogel focuses on the music of the second half of the 16th century. During this time, the English masque held significant social and political relevance, reaching its peak at the court of Queen Elizabeth I.
The masque was a grand celebration, where music and dance were accompanied by satirical plays, pantomime, and masquerades, all of which were essential components. Also included was the “antimasque”, which portrayed the wild, the animalistic, and the uncivilized as a counterpoint to the ordered world.
A large portion of the beautifully preserved repertoire centers on the Queen herself, a woman in a position of power who was both admired and criticized. The music intricately explores the societal roles and images that, from today’s perspective, are critically reevaluated.
In the words of John Bennet:
„Her name all bliss, with voice demiss I sing adoring, Humbly imploring that my rude voice may please her sacred ears, whose skill deserves the music of the spheres“
