Kaleidoscope – Prize Winners’ Concert

We are delighted to welcome Wen-Cheng Wei, who won the 1st Prize in the Solo Professional Group at the 2024 Taiwan Recorder Festival, as our guest.
In his concert program, he presents recorder works from the Baroque and modern eras, focusing on the theme of friendship. These pieces closely connect different eras, continents, and cultures, showcasing a rich tapestry of musical dialogue.
What makes Wen-Cheng Wei exceptional is that he is not only an outstanding recorder player but also an accomplished composer. In 2018, his composition The Golden Fish (for tenor recorder and tape) won 1st Prize at the Composition Competition of the Nordhorn Recorder Festival (Germany). In 2019, The Golden Fish was published by Edition Tre Fontana (Germany), and a recording of the composition was released by Samsong Productions (Germany).
Wen-Cheng Wei (*1999), born in Taiwan, is currently pursuing a Postgraduate University Course in Recorder with Univ. Prof. Dorothee Oberlinger and a Bachelor’s Degree in Composition with Univ. Prof. Achim Bornhöft at the University Mozarteum Salzburg (Austria). He completed his Master’s Degree in Recorder in 2024 and his Bachelor’s Degree in Recorder in 2022, both with distinction.
In 2018, his composition The Golden Fish (for tenor recorder and tape) won 1st Prize at the Composition Competition of the Nordhorn Recorder Festival (Germany). That same year, he secured the 1st Prize in the Solo Professional Group at the Hsinchu International Recorder Competition (Taiwan). His composition The Golden Fish was published in 2019 by Edition Tre Fontana (Germany), with a recording released by Samsong Productions (Germany).
In 2022, Wen-Cheng was invited to present a lecture titled “Wen-Cheng Wei on His Compositions for Recorder and Working Methods” at the 24th Congress of the European Recorder Teachers Association Austria. In 2023, the Potsdam Sanssouci Music Festival (Germany) commissioned him to compose Paratita – Paraphrase on Bach’s Partita BWV 1013 (for alto recorder and viola), which was premiered by Univ. Prof. Dorothee Oberlinger and Prof. Nils Mönkemeyer during the festival.
In 2024, he was invited to perform a recorder solo concert as part of three Fringe Concerts during the Taiwan Recorder Festival, where he also won 1st Prize in the Solo Professional Group of the festival competition. As a special award, he earned the opportunity to give a solo concert at the Bad Kissingen Recorder Festival Days in 2025. Additionally, in 2024, he won 3rd Prize in the Woodwinds Artist Group of the American Virtuoso International Music Competition and performed at the Winners Recital in Carnegie Hall (USA) in January 2025.
