Ensemble Interchange
The ensemble is named after the expressionist painting “Interchange” (1955) by Willem de Kooning – quick, gestural brushstrokes, deep and expressive: On the occasion of the German Music Competition 2024, the five musicians came together and immediately received a scholarship from the German Music Council, along with inclusion in the Concert Promotion of the German Music Competition, and the Special Prize of the Ensemble Academy Freiburg.
With overflowing experimental enthusiasm and virtuosic creativity, the quintet primarily focuses on music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In search of contemporary ways of expression, alongside original compositions and their own arrangements, contemporary compositions are also incorporated into their vividly designed programs.
The ensemble combines its understanding of historical backgrounds and the rhetorical-linguistic elements of music with emotional depth – thus, musical communication and a sensitive exchange with the audience are at the core.
The five musicians, whose roots lie in Germany, Slovenia, Portugal, and Taiwan, are prize winners of prestigious competitions (Musica Antiqua Bruges, International Handel Competition Göttingen, J.S. Bach Competition Leipzig, among others) and perform nationally and internationally.

O powerful love! Sighing, adoration, weeping, singing – love is the muse that has accompanied poets and composers through the centuries. And it still drives us to madness today, in one way or another…
In the late Renaissance, the immediate, genuine expression of emotion in music was declared the highest goal, and the subsequent Baroque era, with its sounds, navigates through the highs and lows of human affections. Compositions from this time powerfully tell of tender romances, yearning passion, and deep melancholy.
The Ensemble Interchange celebrates love in all its facets and embarks on a musical journey into the emotional world of the 17th and 18th centuries. How closely love’s joys and heartache lie together! Johann Sebastian Bach writes a tender song in his wife’s music book, Giovanni Pierluigi di Palestrina sets the passionate passages from the “Song of Songs” to music, and Claudio Monteverdi ecstatically celebrates the beauty of nature. On the other hand, the sister-in-law of King Louis XIV suffers in her marriage to her homosexual husband, lovers in Shakespeare’s dramas head toward the abyss, and even in the mythological world, nymphs and gods struggle with their passions…
